London Heathrow airport tests machines that can provide a clearer image of luggage interior

The London Heathrow airport is testing a new scanner that could prevent passengers from having to remove liquids from their carry-on luggage during security checks, the UK Department of Transportation said today. These computerized tomography machines can offer a clearer image and their use is already widespread in hospitals.

The new scanners, capable of making a 3D radiography, allow security personnel to verify items and detect explosives without removing them from the bags.

"The United Kingdom has some of the strictest security measures in the world and we are leaders in the implementation of new technologies to improve security controls and provide a better user experience," said a spokesman for the Department of Transportation.

At the London airport, a "small number" of tests will be carried out with the new scanners, which will last between six and twelve months, before making the final decision on their use.
