Year one post roaming
Year one post roaming
What do you need to know in order not to overpay if you travel in Europe?
Far is left when one stepped on Paris or Berlin and looked for places to connect to the wifi to share with friends the photos of the trip. It has been a year since the technology frontiers in Europe have fallen and now any citizen can use the mobile networks of any country in the Old Continent - including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway - at no extra cost. Goodbye surprises at the time of arrival of the days of rest for an excess in the bill of the mobile.
A measure that, with the value of technology today, has been almost as important as the 1992 Maastricht Treaty, which gave the green light to the free movement of people in the Schengen area.
Like any rule, it had a small print that it still maintains . On the one hand, you can only enjoy this 'right' if there is a contract with an operator, or what is the same, there is no prepaid link. In this case, although the same conditions have to be applied, it is possible that a limit will be established on the volume of data roaming at a national rate with respect to restrictions in the country of origin.
In turn, we must not forget what is known as 'reasonable and non-abusive use'. European legislation authorizes operators to check the consumption made in the country of destination. If, during a long period of more than four months, a user has spent more time abroad than in Spain, the company has free access to request a clarification of the situation, with a period of 14 days.
If the client studies or works abroad, it can be justified with documents such as the employment contract, the granting of the Erasmus scholarship, a university registration or temporary work proof.
This same month the European Commission has made public the new law that will favor, even more, to use a device in the Old Continent. Thanks to this agreement, the dreaded international calls (which are made from a Spanish terminal to a European device) will have a maximum cost of 19 cents per minute from 2020.
The SMS, meanwhile, will not exceed 6 cents per each one of them. In addition, that same year measures will be set to facilitate the development of 5G in all member countries.
Finally, in the case of serious accidents, natural disasters or terrorist attacks, users will receive alerts through the 112 emergency system thanks to geolocation improvements, something that has already been done in the Netherlands.
Miguel Almeida, CEO of ysi ... , considers that "it is always beneficial for users to lower the costs of the telecommunications service. But, moreover, it is natural that in a space where we already have advantages such as traveling freely between countries and using the same currency (with exceptions), there is also unification in other services, including the telecommunications service and its costs ".
In that sense, "with the continued focus 'mobile first' and the fact that this very personal object has an increasing consumption in its data component, for customers it was a burden to always be aware of finding a Wi-Fi connection when traveling to be able to use the mobile device.
Today, what is the norm is that intensive use of data, so this law is useful for all of us, the users, because it allows us to use the mobile how we want, where we want and when we want ».
