The 'ransomware' quintupled its damage in 2017

The economic impact generated by this computer attack that hijacks the computer in exchange for money was 4,100 million euros

The 'ransomware', computer attacks that 'hijack' the computer in exchange for money, caused damages valued at 4,100 million dollars in 2017, a figure that is five times more than the previous year. In addition, the forecasts for the future are not better , as experts estimate that the figure will exceed 10,500 million euros in 2019.

In a statement, G DATA ensures that these figures are "dwarfed" if other consequences are taken into account such as the loss of sensitive data, business inactivity and productivity drops, the replacement in some cases of certain ICT infrastructures, damage to reputation and image, and lives or physical damages, in case the institutions attacked are hospitals or centers related to health.

Most 'ransomware' use two "highly effective" attack vectors, the "spam" through "botnets" and the "exploit kits". The main novelty of this type of attacks in 2017 is the variety known as ' ransomworm ', a very complex type with worm functions, that is, capable of replicating and propagating between the computers of a network without the need for interaction on the part of of the user.

Its great exponent is WannaCry , which last year infected more than 200,000 teams and generated damages valued at more than 1,640 million euros. This virus was able to spread massively through the Eternal Blue exploit, filtered from the servers of the American NSA, and took advantage of a security breach of a Windows protocol to share files between networks that Microsoft patched two months earlier.
