With 365 days of life, the Unit of Bipolar Disorder of the Clinic of Our Lady of La Paz, the only one in the entire Community of Madrid, has gone from attending 12 cases in its first days of operation to reach 60.

"The incidence of bipolar disorder is increasing," explains Dr. Diego Urgelés, a psychiatrist and head of the unit. Along with the launch of the Bipolar Disorder Unit, the clinic also expanded and consolidated the use of an application to record changes in mood that people with bipolar disorder may present.

«This way we realize the problems, being able to advance consultations to prevent depression, for example», the doctor points out. Each day, patients collect data on their smartphone about their mood, irritability, anxiety, sleep hours and consumption of caffeine or tobacco, among other parameters. The specialists receive this information arranged in graphs that allow them to see in real time how patients improve or worsen.

The system sends an alarm to the professional when it detects significant changes. "The sooner you begin to address these episodes, the better," says the psychiatrist. Since bipolar disorder is a chronic disease, "having the ability to adjust medication and control crises is crucial for patients to be able to lead normal lives," he adds.

So far, the causes of this increase are unknown, but the scientific community shuffles several hypotheses, such as the high prevailing stress level in today's society, the exposure to light sources, the improvement in the diagnosis of this disease, the abuse of antidepressants or the use of cannabis in adolescence.
