The Boston Dynamics robots are getting smarter: they open doors

Tumbling in the air or overcoming obstacles are the feats of these science fiction devices

They are not the robots of the 'Metalhead' chapter of 'Black Mirror', the Netflix technology series, but they look and feel more and more astonishing Boston Dynamics ads. First came the robots that climb stairs or do somersaults and now it is the turn of devices capable of opening doors.

Its origins go back to 2013 when Google developed these robot dogs that finally ended up in the hands of Softbank in exchange for 100 million dollars. The announcement has been made on YouTube and has quickly viralized in the networks.

The images have more than 1 million visits and show how SpotMini , the Boston Dynamics robot, is able to recognize the handle and extend its extendable arm to turn and open the door.

Although, this innovation is not new in Boston Dynamics devices. The first robots launched in 2016 already had this extensible arm and was able to take the garbage and deposit it in its container.

The most remarkable change is the incorporation of several sensors on the four legs of the 'robot dog' and whose weight has dropped considerably to remain below 30 kilograms. In addition, it is equipped with several cameras and with a solid state gyroscope (IMU).

SpotMini is electric and its battery has a range of 90 minutes . Finally, the arm can be programmed and controlled independently to adjust the grip force according to the object.
