Rolls-Royce develops tiny devices to thoroughly check the engines of aircraft
It's not science fiction, nor is it the last scary movie filmed in Hollywood. In particular, it is a Rolls-Royce production and is a real bet to improve the safety of aircraft engines.
This week, the company has presented at the Farnborough International Airshow, held in England, 15 tiny machines to check from inside the company's engines mounted on aircraft.
"They could go running all the way to the combustion chamber. Arriving at this point in a conventional way would take us five hours; With these little robots the process can take only five minutes, "explains James Kell, an engineer at Rolls-Royce.
With only 15 millimeters high, the tiny robots have a 3D scanning camera that allows engineers to detect and evaluate the status of the engines and thus be able to fix them.
Despite this presentation in the British show, it is not yet known when they will be available. However, Rolls-Royce engineers claim to have available several prototypes ready to be tested. One of them is a small cockroach capable of repairing the damage to the compressor blades of an engine.
