e-Glance, Spanish augmented reality for the blind

Researchers from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) are working on the creation of a virtual map of interior enclosures

E-Glance is the latest augmented reality project that helps the blind to improve their autonomy by creating a virtual map of interior enclosures, aided by appropriate interfaces, of the environment, beyond the immediate reach of the cane or the ear.

"The e-Glance technology aims to facilitate the day-to-day work of blind people in the workplace and prevent their expulsion from the market, and it is also extended to other environments such as hotels, shopping centers, train stations", explains Antonio Cobo, researcher of the UPM that participates in the development of this technology.

Through a typho-technology (technologies whose use is adapted to people with visual impairment) controlled through the screen of a smartphone, e-Glance presents a cognitive interface that allows blind people to direct their attention to distant regions and a sensitive interface that informs them of the obstacles present in each region.

Apart from technological development, UPM researchers also study the influence that the use of this technology can have on the quality of life of blind people. "We have analyzed the differences between blind people who explore a virtual environment using this cognitive interface (remote interface) and those who do it with a proximity interface, and for the sensitive interface, we have tried different combinations of voice , gestures, sounds, and vibration, "says Cobo.

The technology improves in the detection of obstacles. "With the distance cognitive interface, a higher percentage of the obstacles in the room is detected, but perhaps the most striking feature is the increase in efficiency: First, the time needed to detect the obstacles for the first time is further reduced of half (53%) and, secondly, the total time spent exploring the room decreases by 38%, "he concludes
