In Spain there are about 2.5 million people who suffer from anxiety, about 2 million who live with depression and 1.6 million people between 15 and 64 years of age who have high risk alcohol consumption.
Pathologies that in many cases have a slow diagnosis that can be shortened thanks to technology . This is the bet of Juan Bellón, researcher of the health district Málaga-Valle del Guadalhorce, who has designed the website Predict Plus Prevent that allows predicting, in just under eight minutes , if there will be an episode of anxiety, depression in the next year or alcohol risk consumption.
The web, in Spanish and English, has been created from algorithms that have proved their validity in previous studies. "We were the first in the world to develop and validate risk algorithms to predict depression, anxiety and alcohol risk consumption in different studies where nearly 4,000 Spanish patients and 6,000 in other European countries have participated," explains Bellón.
These "risk calculators" are the ones that are now used in this website so that citizens who do not suffer from any of these pathologies can predict the appearance of future episodes . The website allows you to choose if you want to calculate one, two or all three options (anxiety, depression and alcohol risk consumption), and the time it takes to answer the questions, if you choose the three options, is about eight minutes.
Once the questions are answered, a score is obtained according to a scale of intervals from highest to lowest risk, and from the score you get to the "Prevention" tab, which shows possible solutions depending on the level of risk through 23 self-help brochures on different topics.
Thus, for example, if it indicates a high risk of suffering from depression in the next year, it is proposed to reduce the risk by performing physical exercise, achieving a more restorative sleep, improving social relationships, avoiding some toxic substances or adequately treating some physical problem.
