A Mobile World Congress with few phones and a lot of Artificial Intelligence

A Mobile World Congress with few phones and a lot of Artificial Intelligence

In the most important trade show of the sector, no big presentations of smartphones are expected, but a great impulse for 5G technology, cybersecurity and the Internet of Things

Those were other times when Mark Zuckerbeg appeared by surprise before the watchful eye of hundreds of attendees at a conference of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The founder of Facebook gave way in 2017 - after three consecutive years as the star of the show - to the CEO of Netflix, Reed Hasting, and to the creator of Pokémon Go, John Hanke. And this year they will not even have relief. According to the head of marketing of GSMA, Michael O'Hara, the speakers of this edition will have a "better impact" in analyzing in depth the innovations of the sector.

Those who are not very fond of technology will not understand what leads to more than 100,000 people to pay tickets between 800 and 5,000 euros to access this fair. One of the reasons is the volume that this market has reached. Estimates by eMarketer reveal that there are already more than 2.5 billion mobile phones in the world. Only in Spain there are about 30 million users of smartphones.

That is why, despite the fact that the innovations that appear to be the stars of this edition are not as mediatic as on other occasions (fourth industrial revolution, Artificial Intelligence, connected cars, Internet of Things or 5G technology), it can not be said that the event that is being held for the thirteenth consecutive year in Barcelona has been deflated, at least in attendees. Thus, although this year it is expected to visit 108,000 people, the same as in 2017, most of the major manufacturers of consumer technology have decided to bet on their own events during the year given the low profile they attract in an event of this size .

Except for Samsung. His is the great presentation on Sunday, which is expected to show the world the new Galaxy S9 and S9 + , its flagship that have filtered images that show a design without frames and a powerful camera. On the part of LG and Huawei, the other two large manufacturers that used to use the MWC for their important announcements, this year -except last minute surprises- have opted to delay them. The rumors point to Huawei present a new tablet and LG a new version of its great V30.

Another of the missed absences is Xiaomi . The Chinese fashion brand has landed this year in Spain with several stores in Madrid and Barcelona - it has just opened its premises in Barcelona on Saturday - but has not organized any press event to announce new smartphones. Apple will also miss the international appointment, but it is already common in the US company.

"Other years the protagonists have been the apparatuses, in this occasion we will see concrete examples of the technology", assures to this newspaper Lluís Soldevila, professor of the EAE Business School. According to the expert, this edition will have three focuses "not so sexy for the user of the street", but "fundamental": applications aimed at creating Industry 4.0, increasingly sophisticated connectivity and virtual assistants .

And all this without forgetting the AI and 5G technology . Some estimates already say that in 2022 there will be 527 million 5G subscriptions in the world, even though this technology has not set foot on the market today except for some tests. About Aritificial Intelligence, this edition will mean the definitive arrival of this technology in our pockets through smartphones with a different heart, as the Mate 10 of Huawei presented in October. From now on the advance will be remarkable and (finally) the average user will begin to notice the implications of carrying a smart device in your pocket.

Watchful drones
One of the novelties of the 2018 edition is that the Mossos will use drones for the first time in the security device , as reported last Thursday by the Catalan police. To be able to use them, a coordination protocol has been established with Enaire and Aena, as it is the first police force that will use this type of technology in a controlled airspace.

Thus, the Mossos will get images and videos in real time taken from the air, which will be sent to the joint police coordination body for their treatment. The security plan of Mobile, led by the Mossos, has the objective of "guaranteeing the normal functioning" of a congress in which more than 108,000 attendees from 200 countries will move and will install their positions 2,300 exhibiting companies, 197 Spanish.
